Purim is celebrated on the 14th of Adar except in Jerusalem where it is celebrated on the 15th Adar. The Jews of Shushan—a walled city—fought their enemies for an extra day.

In Deuteronomy 25:19, we are commanded: “You shall blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; you shall never forget.” Amalek is the historic enemy of the Jews, and Haman is a descendant of Amalek. As we listen to the reading of the Megillah, whenever Haman’s name is mentioned we blot it out with groggers, foot stomping, and shouting.
